The Friends of the Manchester Library is seeking a distinguished volunteer to serve as our next Building Maintenance Manager, a vital leadership role that protects the safety, integrity, and operational excellence of one of Manchester’s most valued community institutions.

This is not a routine volunteer position. It is a stewardship role. The individual selected will serve as the guardian of the physical environment that supports literacy, learning, and community engagement in Manchester.

Position Overview

Title: Building Maintenance Manager
Organization: Friends of the Manchester Library
Location: Manchester, Washington
Time Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per month
Compensation: Volunteer Leadership Appointment
Reporting To: FOML Board of Directors 

Role Purpose

The Building Maintenance Manager ensures that the library facility remains safe, functional, and professionally maintained for patrons, staff, and volunteers. This role combines practical inspection oversight with strategic coordination of specialized repairs when needed.

You will serve as the primary liaison between the facility and the Board regarding building conditions and preventative care.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct a comprehensive monthly inspection of essential building systems, including:
    • Lighting systems
    • Plumbing fixtures such as sinks and toilets
    • Smoke alarms and safety devices
    • General operational functionality
  • Provide a written or verbal monthly report to the FOML Board
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks within your comfort and capability
  • Coordinate and oversee completion of more complex repairs by licensed or hired technicians
  • Help maintain a consistently safe, welcoming environment for the community

Ideal Candidate Profile

 We are seeking a candidate who demonstrates:

  • Fundamental knowledge equivalent to a capable homeowner
  • Practical problem solving skills
  • Strong organizational habits
  • Reliability and professional communication
  • Commitment to community service

Formal certifications are not required. Training and transition support will be provided.
